Esperanza Garcia, age 81, of Ulysses, Kansas died Friday, February 3, 2017, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center – St. Francis Campus in Wichita, Kansas. She was born May 7, 1935, at Alamo, Texas the daughter of Juan and Apolonia (Burnias) Garcia.
She grew up in Texas working in the fields with her parents who were migrant workers, moving to different areas as the crop seasons changed. After moving to Ulysses, she worked at the American Legion as a cook and at the Ulysses Laundry. She was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
She married Ernesto Garcia in 1950 at Portales, New Mexico.
Survivors include three sons, Wally Garcia and wife Dora of Garden City, Kansas, Luis Garcia, and Ernie Garcia and wife Cindy all of Ulysses, Kansas; two daughters, Irene Garcia Nieto and husband Jesus of Ulysses, Kansas and Salome Perez and husband Bob of Lakin, Kansas; companion, Felipe Garcia of Ulysses, Kansas; 15 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters Pauline Garcia and Mary Valdez, one son Juan Garcia, two sisters, one brother, a grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas. Funeral mass will be Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, Kansas.
