Nationally Ranked St. Mary’s Tops Aggies

KSCB News - April 13, 2013 6:57 am

Goodwell, Okla.-Nationally ranked St. Mary’s University got two decisive
wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State University Friday afternoon in Heartland
Conference baseball action.

In game one, starting Rattler pitcher Carl O’Neal earned his tenth win of
the season, scattering seven hits and striking out five in the 9-1 victory.
Alan Scott was on the mound for the Aggies, and even though he took the
loss, he gave up only five hits and struck out three. Two fielding errors in
the second inning helped boost St. Mary’s to a 4-0 lead. Jordan Bernal
walked in the third inning, advanced to second and then third on a double
play, and made it safely home off a Ruben Aguirre single for the sole Aggie
run. OPSU ended up leaving a total of 11 runners stranded for the game, and
in the second and sixth innings had the bases loaded when the inning ended.
Aguirre and Alfonso both had two hits for four at-bats.

The second game started off with a pitcher’s duel as neither team scored
through the first four innings. Starting pitcher Nolan Glasscock gave up
only three hits and his teammates caught two runners stealing. In the fifth
inning, Derek Moczygemba hit a three-run homer to start the Rattler scoring
run, and they went on to blank the Aggies 13-0. St. Mary’s Matt McClain was
stingy with hits, giving up only two, and threw a complete game shutout,
striking out seven. Glasscock was given the loss as he scattered nine hits
in six innings of work.

In addition to getting the wins, the St. Mary’s team also gave something to
their head coach Charlie Migl with the first victory of the day-his 1,000th
career win. Congratulations to Migl for this rare accomplishment!

The first pitch of the final game is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
