Mustangs Gaining Momentum into Opener
KSCB News - August 22, 2012 2:32 pm
On paper, this could be the year the Southwestern Heights Mustangs turn things around. After going 2-7 last year and 1-8 in 2010, the Mustangs return eight starters on offense and 10 starters on defense for third year head coach Matt Scripsick. The Mustangs have 39 out for football at the 3A school. They also lose Scott City on the schedule after the mighty Beavers moved into a different district. This would seem to be the year when maybe the Mustangs could gain some traction against a very good Hi Plains League and a solid district with Holcomb, Lakin, and Cimarron.
The Mustangs return senior quarterback and defensive back Ben Johnsrud who only attempted six passes last year but ran for 339 yards and caught for 237. Senior rb/lb Roger Martinez and senior rb/lb Ivan Chavez are key weapons for SWH. Junior linemen Saudy Rodriguez and Alexis Loya lead the line.
The Mustangs face a challenging start to the season with the opener at Sublette before the home opener against Elkhart and road games to Meade and Stanton County who are ranked #1 and #4 respectively in 2A. Plus two of their three district games are at Mustang Field.
The Mustangs were featured during the Wednesday morning Sportsguys on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
