Last weekend, the LHS Speech and Drama team competed at Hugoton in their first tournament of the season. Katrin Flores took 1st place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Matthew Rice placed 2nd in both Prose and Humorous Solo Acting. These results qualify the students for the State Championship in their respective events. Aleeah Garibay also placed 4th in her novice outing, making for an all-around successful first outing. Coach Micah Howery is extremely excited for this year’s prospects.
These victories follow success on the other side of town, where the SCCC Forensics Team has seen a fantastic first year of competition. After two 3rd place finishes in Parliamentary Debate and Drama in November, the team found its first win in the College Drama category thanks to Kai Howery and Adolfo Almaraz in last December’s Pine Invitational. Justin Kieran, Head Coach for Seward and Assistant Coach for LHS, says that forensics has a chance to thrive in Liberal. “These are some of the most talented students creating the most entertaining art out there, and I couldn’t be more proud of all of them.
Both LHS and SCCC will be featured in Seward’s Forensics Community Showcase later this Spring, along with other surrounding schools.
