Liberal Sweeps Hugoton to Begin Season

The Liberal Redskins and Hugoton Eagles opened their baseball season between a few raindrops Thursday afternoon and evening at the National Beef Sports Complex. Liberal won both games in run rules in five innings 10-0 and 18-6.
In game one, LHS won 10-0. The Skins out hit the Eagles 6-1 and HHS had four errors and Liberal did not commit an error. J. Brooks Kappelmann pitched a one hit shutout. He went five innings with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Liberal scored three in the first, five in the second, and two in the third. Erek Lira was 2-2 with three RBI’s and three runs. Landon Martinez was 2-3. Marco Alonso drove home three runs.
In game two, LHS won 18-6. Hits were even at 7-7 while Hugoton had four errors and LHS committed three errors. The Redskins scored three in the first, four in the second, seven in the third, and four in the fourth. The Eagles scored six in the fourth. Aidan Schwindt pitched 3 and 2/3 innings and did not allow an earned run. He had four strikeouts and two walks. Zayden Martinez pitched 1 and 1/3 scoreless with four strikeouts and no walks. Brooks Kappelmann was 3-4 with two doubles and four runs. Aidan Schwindt was 2-4 with two runs. Zayden Martinez scored three runs and tripled in the win.
Liberal is 2-0 and hosts Garden City for one varsity game at about 6pm after the 4pm JV game. The varsity game will air on 1270 and 92.3.
