On Thursday, May 13th, 2021 at about 4:21 p.m., Liberal Police Department, Liberal Fire Department and Seward County EMS responded to the intersection of Clay Street and Pancake Boulevard in reference to an injury accident.
Upon arrival, officers located a two-vehicle collision. Investigating officers determined the 2006 Ford F150, driven by a 77-year-old male, was stopped in the turning lane at the red light facing west on Pancake and the 2021 Freightliner Travel Trailer, driven by a 58-year-old male, was stopped at the red light westbound on pancake in the outside lane. When the light turned green the Ford F150 remained stopped in the road while the Freightliner began to travel westbound through the intersection. After a short period of time the Ford F150 accelerated rapidly and changed lanes striking the Freightliner near the second and third axel on the left side. Once the Freightliner stopped the Ford F150 continued to accelerate and spin the wheels rapidly until a bystander was able to shut the vehicle off.
The driver of the Ford F150 was unconscious and transported to Southwest Medical Center by Seward County EMS and later flown to Westly Medical Center for further treatment. At this time, it is believed the driver of the Ford F150 was experiencing a medical emergency.
