Liberal Firefighters Respond to Grass Fire Tuesday Evening

The Liberal Fire Department responded to a reported grass fire in the 1600 Block of North Western Avenue on Tuesday evening, at 5:51 pm.
First arriving units reported a fast-moving grass fire located in the open field, West of Western Avenue, that was traveling north towards Eisenhower Middle School. Mutual aid was immediately requested to the Seward County Fire Department. Firefighters immediately attacked the fire and were able to limit the spread to the north and the fire was declared under control at 6:08 pm. Damage was limited to the grass and trees in the open field. Units remained on scene tending to hot spots until 7:19 pm. Investigative efforts found the cause of the fire to be misuse of fireworks.
The Liberal Fire Department responded to the incident with 17 firefighters, two engines, two brush trucks, and two support vehicles. Assisting with the incident was the Seward County Fire Department (two engines, two tankers, one support vehicle, and seven personnel), Liberal Police Department, Seward County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Seward County EMS.
