Liberal Boys Golf Finally Begins Season

Liberal varsity golf finally opened their season at the Newton Invitational yesterday where twenty teams and 96 golfers competed at Sand Creek Station–the host course for 6A state in May. The tournament was won by Sion Audrain of Garden City who shot even par at 72. The team title went to Maize South who won it with a 318 followed by Garden City at 324 and Salina Central in third at 339. While Liberal claimed the second place position in 2018, we did not fair as well this year. Of the twenty teams, we finished in the bottom quarter at 16th. I attribute that to a lack of tournament experience this year due to weather delays. We just weren’t used to the difference between practice and competition. Individually, none of the Liberal boys were able to overcome some tough holes, so we failed to take home any medals. We don’t get much rest as a squad as we have three tournaments in the next nine days–Garden City, Hays, and Dodge City. We’ll use this tournament as good experience and a chance for us to see what we need to focus on at practice.
