LHS Tennis Plays in Wind in Great Bend

David Short

The Liberal Redskins boys tennis team had a busy weekend. Thursday they traveled to Olathe to compete and then battled the winds in Great Bend on Saturday.

On Thursday the Redskins battled some of the top tennis teams in the state in Olathe. Team competing were Olathe South, Maize, Maize South, Ark City, Derby, St Thomas Aquinas, Overland Park – Mill Valley and Liberal. We were down one player who had a last minute appointment he had to go to but we battled with 5. Having just 5 we couldn’t compete in the team standings.
Individually
Singles – Quinn Brown finished 0-4 against some of the best players these teams had to offer. As a freshman he is learning a lot playing these good player despite taking some losses.
Doubles – Parker Brown & Daniel Nguyen finished the day 3-1. The dropped their first match 8-3 against the eventual runner ups from Maize South before getting wins against Olathe South, Derby and St Thomas Aquinas. Successful day for these two.
Doubles – Emmanuel Garcia & Jackson Dodge okayed their first ever matches together without any practice and fought hard. The started off by losing 8-3 to Olathe South, then they defeated Ark City in a tie breaker. The finished by losing to St Thomas Aquinas and then dropping an incredible battle with Derby 8-6.
On Saturday Liberal traveled to Great Bend for some windy tennis. Wind gusts reached 55mph which is ridiculous weather to play tennis in. There were some really good tennis teams there. Competing were Hays, Great Bend, Ellinwood, Scott City, Hoisington Hays 2 and Liberal. Great Bend did themselves a favor and put the top 4 teams (Liberal, Scott City, Hays & Ellinwood) in the opposite bracket. This did help us to get to see really good players throughout in order to improve instead of having some easy matches.
Individually
1 singles – Quinn Brown finished 0-3 against the top singles from the teams in our pool.
2 singles – Jackson Dodge finished 1-3 in our pool and then won their cross pool match to finish 2-2 on the day.
1 doubles – Parker Brown & Daniel Nguyen went 1-2 in pool play then won their cross pool match to also finish the day 2-2.
2 doubles – Emmanuel Garcia & Jovanni Garcia went 2-1 in the pool and then won the cross pool to finish 3-1 and take 3rd place.
