LHS Girls Tennis Team Looks to Serve Up Success

KSCB News - August 25, 2011 6:43 am

The Liberal girls tennis team has to serve up success. That’s the area of the game where fifth year head coach Bret Irby has the most concern is the team’s serving. Plus they lose Susan Nguyen to graduation and the tennis program at Seward. She placed 10th at state as a junior and was the WAC player of the year last year. Katie Plunk also graduated from the varsity team.

This year Susan’s sister senior Kathy Nguyen takes over the number one singles slot and junior Shelby Hay will be competing at number two singles. The number one singles team is junior Lauren Harp and junior Jackie Nguyen. The number two team is senior Melissa Alvarado and junior Maddie Reese.

There are 20 girls out for tennis this season.

Liberal hosts their invitational today at 3 p.m. at Bluebonnet and Tobias parks and SCCC/ATS. The tournament begins at 3 p.m. with #1 singles and doubles at the Rowley Tennis Courts at Bluebonnet. Ashland, Scott City, Meade, and Garden City will compete in Thursday’s tournament.

Bret Irby and his two seniors Kathy Nguyen and Me3lissa Alvarado will be guests during the Thursday morning Sportsguys between 7:37 and 9 on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
