LHS Girls Blank Great Bend for Home Opening Win

Brock Kappelmann - April 14, 2017 6:25 am

The Liberal girls soccer team won their home opener Thursday evening at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex.  LHS defeated Great Bend 2-0 after a lightning delay.

Kayla Gokey opened up the scoring early in the first half at the 6:20 mark on a PK after LHS was fouled hard in the box.  Liberal had several more opportunities in the half but couldn’t put it away.  LHS led 1-0 at the half.  Johaly Portillo scored 30 seconds into the half to make it 2-0.  LHS dominated shots on goal 7-1.  LHS head coach Carlos Ruiz liked what he saw.

“Despite having a couple of key players out with injury, our team showed some very great things,” Ruiz said.  “I think this was our best and most balanced game we have played all season.  The girls battled all game and were very physical.  Our back three and goal keeper played extremely well and composed for the full 80 minutes.  Our midfield players came together and our forwards made the little things happen and made them count.”

The JV tied 1-1.

LHS is 4-4 and 2-2 in the WAC.  Liberal hosts Hays Thursday at 1 at Redskin Field.
