The 2016-2017 Redskin Cheerleaders are gearing up for another exciting season at LHS. They attended NCA Cheer Camp at Emporia State University from July 8th – 11th and had an excellent week once again. At the conclusion of camp, the JV Cheerleaders won the Top Game Day Team in the Non-Varsity Division. The Varsity Cheerleaders won the Overall Top Game Day Team in the Varsity Division. They also took home the Champion Chant Trophy for the Varsity Division. Over the past four years, the LHS Cheerleaders have taken home 11 trophies from NCA Summer Camps.
Along with these accomplishments, they took home several individual awards, including three All-Americans: Katie Franz, Emily Roberts, and Arlene Ruiz. In fifteen years of coaching cheerleading, we finally took home the Top All-American Award with Katie Franz. On top of team evaluations and competitions, several girls are selected to try out for the All-American team, which is based on individual skills: tumbling, jumps, motions, and vocal projection. Katie had the highest score out of 197 camp participants. She also won the NCA Individual Leadership Award, which is given to one person out of the entire camp who shows outstanding leadership and integrity. This is the second straight year that Liberal has won this award. Katie follows in the footsteps of Gaby Amparan, who won it last year at K-State. Because of her exceptional cheerleading skills and leadership, Katie was also asked to be on NCA Staff next summer, where she will have the opportunity to pass on her gifts to others and make a difference in their teams.
Along with these top awards, LHS Cheerleaders came away with several Superior ribbons and two specific awards from evaluations for Excellence in Motions and Excellence in Jumps.
Plans for the rest of the summer include the completion of the weight lifting program and preparations for the Fun Run Pep Rally, Freshman Frenzy, and Redskin Football. They look forward to supporting all Liberal athletes and showing off their new skills for the crowd to enjoy.
The Redskin Cheerleaders are coached by fourth year coaches, Scarlette Diseker and Nikki Frydendall. They are assisted by Isabelle Williams and Karen Roush.
