Seward County continued their Jayhawk Conference schedule on Wednesday with a road trip out to El Dorado to begin a six-game road stint with the Lady Saints facing the #6 Butler Grizzlies with SCCC falling behind early in the first ten minutes and could not recover despite a late goal from Meredith Rosas to get them on the board in a 4-1 loss.
Seward County started the game with a depleted roster due to multiple injuries but were still able to contend through the first few minutes with multiple opportunities to drive down the field. It was Butler however who scored first after stealing the ball away from goalkeeper Miu Kamei for an unguarded goal for the Grizzlies who took a 1-0 lead over the Lady Saints. From there the defense remained steady for SCCC as they protected the goal over the course of the next twenty minutes before a corner kick opportunity for Butler led to their second goal and a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Goal three of the afternoon came less than two minutes into the second half with the Grizzlies sending in a corner kick that ended up being deflected by Kiara Leiton on the back line but was sent straight into a shot attempt from Butler for goal number three and a 3-0 lead. Seward County’s defense held the Grizzlies back to beyond the twenty-yard line with Kamei adding a few more saves to her total over the course of the next fifteen minutes and despite holding Butler to a farther distance, a long range shot attempt landed above the outreached hand of Kamei to give the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead. The Lady Saints did not go home scoreless however thanks to Rosas who stepped up big with Nicole Calderon finding her off a corner kick to lead right into Seward County’s only goal of the afternoon to make the final score 4-1.
Seward County now falls to 2-4-2 on the 2024 campaign overall with a 1-4-1 record in Jayhawk Conference action. The Lady Saints will continue their road stint on Saturday when Seward County heads to Coffeyville to face the Red Ravens in a 4:00 PM matchup.
