Despite trailing by as many as eight in the second half, the Liberal Lady Redskins would not be denied a WAC opening victory. LHS defeated Hays 56-51 in Hays Friday night to improve to 5-2 and eclipse last year’s win total.
LHS overcame going 16-27 at the foul line and sporadic play offensively to earn the win. LHS trailed 8-0 but led 12-10 after one. Liberal trailed 21-18 at the half and saw the Lady Indians go on a 14-1 run and lead 27-19 in the second half. The Lady Skins ripped off a 13-1 run toe lead 32-28 with 2:03 to play in the third. LHS led 42-36 before Hays rallied to lead 45-44 with 3:30 to go. But Hays couldn’t stop Jade Mickens who had a career high 24 points or Diamond Bailey who had a season high 16.
Liberal is 5-2 and 1-0 in the WAC while Hays is 3-4 and 0-1. LHS plays at Garden City Tuesday night at 6 with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
