KSCB News - April 16, 2013 12:47 pm
In the final week of the 2013 regular season, the 10th
ranked Seward County Lady Saints tennis team wrapped up their Region VI
schedule with a 6-3 win over Hesston on Friday before falling in their
finale 8-1 to Johnson County on Saturday. In their first match against
Hesston, the Lady Saints dominated, winning 6 of the 7 contested matches
to knock off the Larks but the competition was ramped up a little bit on
Saturday as Seward took on the region favorite Cavaliers who downed them
8-1 with freshman Kathryn Roohan picking up the Lady Saints only win of
the afternoon.
Friday the Lady Saints made their second straight
weekend trip to North Central Kansas, this time to Hesston to take on
the Lady Larks on their home turf. Seward wasted no time in showing
their dominance, jumping out to a 2-0 lead right away as Katiuska
Adarmes and Anna Braun teamed up to win 8-1 in #1 singles over Samantha
Aeschlman and Savannah Mitchell while Leticia Monteiro and Kathryn
Roohan did the same in #2 doubles against Naromi Hayono and Emma Payne.
Hesston picked up a default win in #3 doubles, but still the Lady Saints
led 2-1 after doubles action.
Seward continued to be on point in singles play as
Adarmes led things off with a blanking of Hayono in #2 singles, winning
6-0, 6-0 to give the Lady Saints a 3-1 lead in the match. Roohan also
had an easy time of things in #4 singles, downing Mitchell 6-0, 6-1 to
give Seward their fourth point of the match, but with a default win at
#6 and a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5, Hesston was back into things at 4-3. The
Larks hopes wouldn’t last for long however as Monteiro defeated Payne
6-1, 6-1 in #3 singles to clinch the match for the Lady Saints and Braun
had no trouble with Aeschlman at the #1 slot to finish the match in
style as the Lady Saints came out on top 6-3.

The Lady Saints knew their road would get a bit tougher
on Saturday as they jumped on the road to Salina to take on #6 Johnson
County in a neutral court setting at Oakdale Park. With defaults at #3
doubles and #6 singles, the Lady Saints were already in a tough spot
against the Region VI heavyweights and things got even tougher as
Johnson County brought home both the #1 and #2 doubles wins with 8-4
victories over Seward to go on top 4-0.
The Lady Cavs sealed the match win early in singles play
with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 and went up 6-0 after Lindsey Buenger tripped
up Monteiro 6-0, 6-1 in #3 action. Anna Braun battled for Seward in #1
singles, but couldn’t overcome the power of Johnson’s top player,
Shannon Beckett, who came into the season ranked 5th in the country as
Beckett took the point with a 6-2, 6-1 win to put the Cavs up 7-0.
Seward earned their only win of the match at #4 singles where Roohan
defeated Sarah Ong 7-5, 6-1 and nearly had their second point at #2
singles where Adarmes and Erika Lopez were tangled up in an epic battle
with Lopez eventually coming out on top of a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-6 score to
give Johnson County the 8-1 win in the match.
