For the first time in program history, the Liberal girls soccer team enjoyed a winning record. LHS was 8-7-2 last year with a 3-4-1 WAC record. For their 2025 season, the Lady Red has some key positions to fill from last year with a strong group of freshmen and sophomores ready to keep Liberal competitive. Liberal has 35 out for girls soccer under coach Carlos Ruiz who enters his ninth season as head coach.
The Lady Red graduated nine players and seven starters from that team last year including 1st team all WAC goalie Ashley Acevedo who started much of the season in goal at Seward and 1st team all WAC Hailey Contreras who plays basketball at Tabor.
But Liberal returns a pair of players who were 2nd team all WAC last year in senior center midfielder Nicole Catalan and senior defender Isabela Gutierrez. Sophomore Liliana Santiago anchors the backline. Aaliyah Morales steps in at goal keeper in her junior season. In addition to Catalan, LHS will look for offensive firepower from So. Evelin Tarango, Fr. Liliana Guy, So. Yvonna Rivera, and Fr. Ashley Batista, and others.
In 2023, LHS was 6-11 and 2-6 in the WAC. LHS went 6-10 and 3-5 in the WAC in 2022 after finishing 2021 8-9-1 with a playoff win over Junction City and 4-3-1 in the WAC. Liberal went 7-8-3 with a playoff win in 2019 with a playoff win over Wichita South. Liberal was 6-10-1 in 2018, 8-9-1 in 2017, and 7-10 in 2016. Those records are significant because before 2016, only once had the Liberal girls won seven or more games in a season (2008).
