LIBERAL, Kan. – Kylee Hunt had a game-high 23 points and Ari Gordon added 15 points to power the Seward County Community College women’s basketball team to an 82-64 triumph over Northeastern Junior College on Monday at the Greenhouse.
The Lady Saints improved to 4-1 and start Jayhawk conference play on Wednesday at Cloud County.
Seward, coming off a tough loss at McCook on Tuesday, bounced back nicely with the victory thanks to Hunt’s performance, who also had team-highs with 12 rebounds and four assists. Along with Hunt and Gordon, Kezia Grant-Bobb chipped in with 10 points and Allie Myers dropped in nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.
While the Lady Saints received the bulk of their offense from the starters, the bench did contribute, adding 20 points from four players.
It was nip-and-tuck to start the contest with neither team gaining much of an advantage. Northeastern was up 10-9 with 4:22 left in the first quarter and that would be the last lead it would see the rest of the way.
The Lady Saints exploded to end the quarter with 15 straight points, grabbing a 24-10 lead. Hunt scored six, Maddie Kincaide netted five and Destiny Alexander and Myers each added a bucket in the outburst. Grant-Bobb also scored two to start the second quarter and capped the 17-0 run before the Plainswomen finally scored at the 8:54 mark.
Seward held a 48-29 advantage at the half and led by as many as 24 in the third quarter. The Lady Saints were up 63-42 after three and while the Plainswomen made a slight push with threes in the final stanza, Seward was never threatened.
Bella Petersen had 18 points and Daniela Garcia Gasco scored 14 points to pace the Plainswomen, who remained winless on the season at 0-7.
Seward plays Wednesday at 6pm at Cloud on 107.5 with Saints Shoot-around at 5:45.
