Kansas Senate Approves School Funding Plan

KSCB News - April 6, 2014 9:34 pm

The Kansas Senate has approved a plan that would increase aid to poor school districts as well as eliminate tenure for public school teachers.

The Senate voted 22-16 on Sunday to approve a compromise drafted by Republicans in both legislative chambers.

The House was expected to vote on it later Sunday. It would go to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback for consideration if both chambers pass it.

The plan is designed to comply with a Kansas Supreme Court order last month in a lawsuit over education funding filed by parents and four school districts in 2010. The court directed lawmakers to boost aid to poor districts.

The plan does so, but conservative Senate Republicans insisted on eliminating teachers’ tenure. The proposal brought dozens of teachers to the Statehouse to protest.
