Kansas Launches Online Voter Registration

AP) – Kansas officials have created an online system to help residents register to vote from the convenience of their computers.

The system links the secretary of state’s voter registration process with the Department of Revenue’s driver’s license database. Residents submit their application, which is verified with information already in the state system.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh said a recent state law that allowed for transactions with digital signatures made the online registration possible. The revenue department already has the signatures of valid driver’s license holders.

The system had a quiet launch about three weeks ago and Thornburgh said 88 Kansans have registered. The hope is to reduce the use of paper and provisional ballots cast during elections.
