Varsity at Colby   Girls and JV at Ulysses

The boys’ varsity traveled to Colby KS to compete in the 2021 Eagle Invitational Duals. The boys had a really good start to the tournament on Friday night, going 3 and 1 beating Monarch 60 to 24, Hutchi 42 to 41, and Lawrence 54 to 30. The only loss of the night came to the hands of the team that would wind up 2nd overall in the tournament, Junction city. Liberal ended the dual with Junction tied but would wind up losing to them due to criteria points from a questionable disqualification call during the Mendez vs Blake Match.

Going into day two the Redskins still looked primed to at least compete for fourth, or with a little luck, wind up in the 1st through 3rd bracket. However the loss of Mendez and then another Liberal wrestler not able to compete on Saturday hurt the chances of Liberal, and they would wind up falling to Lexington 42 to 39, landing Liberal in the 7th through 9th bracket instead. Liberal would struggle in the bracket facing some tough competition in the spots where Liberal was solid, too much youth in some weight classes, and two open weight classes. The liberal who started the tournament hot lost to both McPherson, 45 to 27, and Goodland, 54 to 27.

The highlights from the tournament were that Trystian Juarez would receive the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament and Jesus Torres got the most pins award. Davian Franco finished 3 and 4, Edgar Landa 4 and 0, Skyler Hubbard 2  and 4, Emilio Salinas 1  and 6, Irving Mendez 1 and 1, Michael Byrd 3 and 4, Tommy McClure 5 and 2, Rigoberto Armendariz 0 and 7, Jesus Torres 7 and 0, Max Arcos 3 and 4, Trystian Juarez 7 and 0, Javon Allen 6 and 1, Mathew Trejo 5 and 2, and Emmanual Catalan 3 and 3.

Liberal also took numerous girls and a few JV to Ulysses over the weekend to compete in the 58th Annual Ron Smith Invitational. The tournament had a limited number of girls at the tournament so Liberal only brought youth and inexperienced wrestlers on the girls’ end to get mat time and be ready for next week’s tournament in Hoisington. But the Ladies did really well, even though most of them had to wrestle each other for most of the day. Liberal brought 12 girls and 11 placed at the tournament. Isabella Gutierrez, Luz Tercero Vargas, and Jasmine Rangel all came out with first-place finishes. Keirsie Carlile, Kenzie Kolb, Ashlynd Winchell, and Alexa Valenzuela took home 2nd place. Rosa Pablo, Angelica Quezada,  and Georgina Dominguez grabbed 3rd. Amelia Alarcon took home 4th and Gisel Tarango Moralesplaced 5th.

The JV boys would also bring home medals with Andy Nguyen and Hudson Ricetaking 1st. Orlando Munoz and Edmundo Leyva took 2nd, while Daniel Don Juan, Johnny Clifton, and Mason Bickerstaff finished 3rd.

Overall a much improved weekend for the Angry Red wrestling team. With room for improvement, several teams are taking notice of some fierce competition going on the mat. “We will continue to keep putting in the hard work and climbing that mountain.”

Liberal has a Dual in Ulysses this week on Thursday and then Girls and some boys travel to Hoisington to compete before the break.
