Hornets Sting Lady Red Late

Valley Center buried a left elbow jumper with one second left sending the Valley Center Lady Hornet to a 34-33 win over the Liberal Lady Redskins Tuesday night in Valley Center. Valley Center out-rebounded Liberal by nine.
The Lady Red looked like they might run away with it early building leads of 9-0 and 12-3. LHS led 12-8 after one quarter. Valley led 21-17 and it was 21-19 VCHS at the half. Valley Center led 29-26 after three. Liberal took a 33-30 lead but never scored again. Liberal turned it over several times against the Valley Center press in the last minutes of the game.
Liberal shot 35 percent from the field and lost despite 12 steals and 19 VCHS turnovers. Liberal held Valley Center to 32 percent shooting. LHS was 5-9 from the foul line and Valley Center was 10-11.
Hailey Contreras scored 13 and was Epic Touch Player of the Game.
It was the first meeting between the two schools in girls basketball since 2002 when coach Toby Wynn’s Lady Skins upset Valley Center at sub state at Kapaun.
Valley Center is 1-0. Liberal is 1-1. Liberal hosts Southwestern Heights Friday night at 6pm with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
