The Holcomb Longhorns swept the Liberal Redskins 13-6 and 11-5 Tuesday afternoon and night at the National Beef Sports Complex. Liberal pitching walked 26 Holcomb hitters while Holcomb pitchers walked 12 in a marathon day which saw the second game end just a few minutes before 10pm.
In game one, Holcomb scored six unearned runs in the first inning runs due in large part to Liberal’s inability to catch a fly ball in the infield or outfield. Liberal committed two errors in the inning. LHS came back with two in the bottom of the first. The Longhorns added five in the third to lead 11-2 and plated one in the fourth to lead 12-2. The Redskins avoided a run rule with three in the fifth. Both teams plated a run in the sixth. Holcomb out-hit Liberal 11-4. Liberal committed four errors and Holcomb had three. Alex Schwindt was 2-3 with three RBI’s. Liberal pitching walked 14 and Holcomb walked eight. The game lasted about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
In game two, it was scoreless until the Horns plated three in the third. LHS scored one in the bottom of the third. Holcomb added three fourth inning runs and one in the fifth to lead 7-1. The Longhorns took a 10-1 lead with three in the sixth. Liberal’s bats perked up under the lights with three in the sixth and one in the seventh. Hits were even at nine a piece. LHS had two errors and HHS had one. But the Redskin pitchers walked 12 and Holcomb walked four. Xavier Porras, Ethan Olmstead, and Alex Schwindt had two hits a piece. Austin Dodge had two RBI’s.
Liberal is 0-4 and hosts Hugoton Friday at 4pm at the National Beef Sports Complex.
