Hays Routs Redskins

Hays built a 22-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 29-0 win over Liberal at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex Friday night. Hays gashed Liberal in the first half with misdirection cross bucks in their backfield. Liberal played without quarterback Jared Hasik so Juan Rodriguez played quarterback rather than free safety causing LHS to shuffle their defensive lineup.

Hays quarterback Kohlton Meyers took the first play from scrimmage 54 yards setting up a Hunter Brown TD run at the 10:17 mark. Hays led 7-0 after one quarter. Meyers lofted a perfect fade pass to Keith Dryden for a 35 yard TD at the 8:26 mark of the second quarter to lead 14-0. Brown’s 21 yard run with 1:43 to play made it 20-0 and the Indians fake field goal and two point conversion on a Maddux Winter pass to Shane Berens made it 22-0 which was the halftime score. The Indians, who use most of their players on offense and defense, milked the clock much of the second half. Brown, the son of LHS graduate and current Fort Hays State head coach Chris Brown, ran for his third touchdown of the night with 7 minutes to play in the third.

Hays amassed 325 yards and held Liberal to 145 yards. Tyler Martinez rushed for 90 yards in the loss. Hays is 1-2 and 1-0 in the WAC and has won 21 of their past 24 WAC games while the Redskins are 1-2 and 0-1 and have lost 26 of their last 27 WAC games. Liberal plays at Dodge City Friday at 7 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
