After four consecutive wins over Hays, Liberal’s Lady Redskins struggled in a 48-41 loss to the Hays Lady Indians Friday night in Hays in the WAC opener.  The Lady Red committed 22 turnovers in the loss and missed multiple lay-ups and two footers in the loss.

The #8 4A division 1 Lady Indians led 9-6 after one and 21-14 at halftime.  Hays built their biggest lead of nine at 23-14 early in the third quarter.  The Lady Skins played their best ball midway through the third.  An Ali Lucero three pointer gave the Lady Redskins a 28-27 lead  with 3:01 to play in the third.  Hays would promptly swish a three after a timeout and led 32-30 after three.  Another Lucero three pulled LHS to within two at 39-37 with 4:28 to play.  Liberal was 3-16 from three and missed several opportunities to make a run during the closing minutes as Hays continued to put up quick shots.  But LHS was unable to convert as they were 11-39 from the field despite a solid 13-16 free throw line performance.

Machia Mullens had 14 while Ali Lucero added 12 for LHS.

Liberal is 5-1 and 0-1 in the WAC while Hays is 6-1 and 1-0.  Liberal plays at Garden City Tuesday at 6 with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
