Guymon Tiger Boys Cross Country Takes State

The Guymon Tiger Boys Cross Country team under the direction of 12th year Head Coach Andy Brown, made the trek to Edmond OK on Saturday November 2nd for the State Cross Country Championships. The long drive proved to be fruitful as the Tiger harriers stood atop the podium winning the 5A State Championship by 30 points. This is the Tigers 4th State title in the last 5 years.

The Tigers scored a meet low of 61 points with Piedmont High School in 2nd with 91 points. Rounding out the top 3 was Bishop Kelley High School with 105.

Guymon placed 3 runners in the top 10 for team scoring at 2nd, 9th, and 10th. The remaining scorers Came in at 19th and 21st respectively.

Leading the way for the Tigers and 2nd overall was Junior, Dereje Himbago with a time of 16:09, just 21 seconds out of 1st. In 9th was Sophomore Mulu Grebesiluse at 16:46 and in 10th for the Tigers was Bret Fields running 16:55.

The next two scoring runners for Guymon was Senior Isaac Olivas at 17:13 and in 21st was Henok Gebrekistos at 17:16.

Guymon’s 6th runner was Binyam Achiseu in 47th at 17:56 and in 61st was Jhonathon Guerrero at 18:13.

Coach Brown said he couldn’t be more proud of his athletes, coaching staff, and fans. “I am very proud of our kids and coaching staff. They are very hard workers and never give up. Our kids believed they could win and ran a great race to back it up. We had so much support from our school and community that it’s overwhelming. We appreciate all the support. We had a spirit bus with 43 kids leave at 6:45am from Guymon to come and watch the kids run.”

The Guymon Girls team placed 8th in their race at State.
