Guymon House Fire During Blizzard Conditions

Joe Denoyer - January 10, 2024 1:27 pm

While blizzard conditions continued, Guymon Fire Fighters battled a house
fire Monday night.

Texas County 911 center received a call from the occupants at 410 N. East street
reporting their house on fire at 10:25pm Monday night. “Fire Department
officials arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the back of the house and from
the roof on all 4 sides”, said Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley. Firefighters
assisted the occupants and their pets out to safety with no injuries. Firefighters
entered the home to find the entire attic area to be involved in fire and smoke.
Quick actions by Firefighters in locating the fire and stopping it from spreading
saved the remainder of the home. Fire was isolated just to the attic are which is a
complete lost including the roof. It took Firefighters nearly 10 minutes to bring
the fire under control. Guymon Emergency Management and Red Cross
provided services immediately to the family on scene.

Firefighters and units were already out in this storm assisting citizens in this fierce
winter storm. Fire units arriving first were just blocks away when the 911 call
came in.

“As Firefighters were extinguishing the fire, it was taking just minutes for ice and
snow to form on their gear and limit their movements due to the cold and wind,
but we still got the job done and saved the home,” stated Chief Wadley. Extreme
caution by Firefighter in situations just like this have to be made to also prevent
water in the Fire trucks and fire hoses from freezing and bursting.
Cause of the fire is suspected to be electrical in nature and estimated damage
cost is $60,000. Homeowners were able to stay with nearby family
and also were able to salvage personal items saved by the Firefighters.

Guymon Fire Department was assisted by Guymon Utility Department, TCEC, Emergency
Management, and Guymon Police.
