Guymon Completes First Basketball Sweep Over Liberal in 17 Years

Brock Kappelmann - February 8, 2023 7:21 am

For the first time since 2006, the Guymon Tigers took two over the Liberal Redskins in the boys basketball season.  It was never a close game.  The Tigers built a big lead and coasted to a 65-48 win over the Redskins in the Big House Tuesday night.  Liberal had 22 turnovers in the loss.

It was the same script for lackluster Liberal, fall behind early, allow points in the paint, and turn the ball over at a dizzying pace.

The Tigers came out smoking making three of their first four three’s to lead 18-3 before a 21-5 lead after one.  GHS led 26-6 and 28-9 before Liberal closed the gap to 31-18.  But a few Liberal turnovers leading to Guymon lay up took care of that as Guymon led 37-18 at halftime.  Guymn led 46-31 after three.  LHS closed the gap to 51-39 but no closer.

The Redskins shot 34 percent from the field.  They were 4-21 from three and 9-17 from the foul line.  Guymon shot 53 from the field and 5-10 from three point range.

Guymon’s Randall Coble scored 15 to lead the Tigers.  Tarick Watson had 13.  Liberal’s Zayden Martinez had 15 points and nine rebounds.  Brooks Kappelmann had 11 points and six rebounds.  Izzy Rotolo had nine points and a two handed break away dunk.

Liberal loses their 12th straight to fall to 2-13 and Guymon is 10-11.  Liberal plays at Hays Friday night at about 7:45 on 1270 and 92.3.  Guymon hosts Hooker for senior night Saturday night in Guymon.
