The #6 class 5A Great Bend Panthers swept the Liberal Redskins 14-6 and 12-1 Friday afternoon and evening at the National Beef Sports Complex. The Redskins have dropped five in a row.
In game one, the Panthers were on the prowl early with three in the first and five in the second. Great Bend’s Carson Umphres and Owen Kaiser both hit home runs in the 1st and 2nd respectively. The Redskins got back in the game with four in the second. Austin Dodge lined a home run over the left field wall. Ethan Olmstead singled home a run. GBHS had three errors in the inning. It was 8-4 after two. The Panthers put up two more runs in the third to lead 10-4. The Panthers scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to lead 14-4. The Skins scored two in the seventh. Landon Martinez ripped an RBI double to center and Eathan Hernandez singled him home. GB out-hit LHS 14-8. Great Bend won despite six errors and Liberal had two errors. Austin Dodge was Epic Touch Player of the Game pitching 4 and 1/3 innings and the home run. Landon Martinez was 2-4 with two RBI’s.
In game two, Great Bend scored two in the first and two in the third. The Redskins scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Schwindt singled home a run to make it 4-1. That was the scored with two outs and nobody on base in the sixth. But Great Bend scored eight runs on seven hits and one error with two outs. Great Bend out-hit Liberal 13-6. Liberal had three errors and Great Bend played errorless baseball. Skyler Hubbard pitched 5 and 2/3 innings and was Epic Touch Player of the Game. Landon Martinez was 2-3.
Great Bend is 8-1 and 4-1 in the WAC. They have won five in a row over Liberal. The Redskins are 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the WAC. Liberal hosts Woodward Thursday at 5pm.
