Derby Takes Down Liberal

Brock Kappelmann - June 11, 2018 6:40 am

There is good news and bad news for the Liberal Bee Jays. The good news is they went 4-2 in their first road trip of the season which took them to Haysville and Derby. The bad news is they just lost a series to the Derby Twins after a lethargic showing Sunday night in an 11-5 loss at Panther Field in Derby.

Liberal did not score in the first after loading the bases with one out. However Sean Arnold rifled a three RBI triple off the wall in center to score three runs in the second. Peyton Johnson homered to left center to lead off the third to make it 4-0. Liberal’s next two runners made it on base but Liberal hit into a line drove double play to end the inning and the momentum changed. Derby scored three in the third against starter Dylan Paul. Derby scored one in the fourth to tie it. They blew it open with five in the fifth to lead 9-4. Josh Zanger was a bright spot out of the bullpen going three strong innings. Liberal’s bats fell silent with only five hits. Johnson had two of them. The Twins had 11 hits. Liberal falls into second place at 4-2 in the Jayhawk League while the Twins are 3-2.

Liberal is off Monday and begins a three game series at home with the first place 4-1 Hays Larks on Tuesday at 7 at Brent Gould Field. Equity Bank is the buyout sponsor. The game airs on 1270 and kscbnews.net with pregame at 6:45.
