Defense Sparkles in 4th of July Win

It was a highlight reel game for the Liberal Bee Jay defense.  Playing in front of thousands at Brent Gould Field for the 4th of July game Tuesday night, the Bee Jays turned in one of their best defensive nights on the way to a 4-2 win over the Dodge City A’s.  Shortstop Jaron Robinson and second baseman Zac Cook turned in a 4-6-3 double play in the first and a 6-4-3 double play in the third.  Left fielder Garrett Scott threw out a runner trying to make it to third and Chad Kennedy made a running catch in right center.  Catcher Kyle Schmidt didn’t let anything get by either.  Those are just a few examples.

Cole Jenkins (4-0) went six strong innings for the win.  Chance Carner pitched a scoreless inning and Derek Craft went two scoreless for the save.

The Bee Jays scored first when Trent Maloney singled and Colton Onstott doubled down the first baseline to score Maloney.  Dodge City tied the game with a run in the fifth on three straight singles.  Liberal reclaimed the lead in the fifth.  Onstott doubled to right center to lead off the inning.  Kyle Schmidt singled him home.  With one out James Hardberger singled.  Marcus Shoemaker singled home a run but Hardberger was thrown out at third.  Liberal scored another run on a Dodge City error.  Dodge City threatened with two singles to lead off the sixth but Garrett Scott threw out a runner at third in a key play so the A’s settled for a one run inning.  The A’s out-hit the BJ’s 10-9 but DC had two errors.

Liberal is 21-6 and goes 2-1 at home versus the A’s.  The A’s are 17-8.  The two teams play a double header in Dodge City’s Cavalier Field Wednesday night at 6 with the Dugout Show at 5:45 on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
