PARK CITY, Kan. – It was another day in the office for the Seward County Lady Saints as they blew past the Coffeyville Red Ravens in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament, 103-64. Five Lady Saints came away in double-figures, led by Vilma Covane’s career-high 20 points.
Seward has been re-writing their record books all season long and they continued to do so for their first postseason game. The 103 points is the most scored by the Lady Saints in a Region VI Tournament game away from the Greenhouse.
After a week off, Seward came out a little rusty, hitting two of their first five shots. Seven minutes into the quarter the Lady Saints were leading by just one point, 10-9. Lexi Hernandez stole a ball from Sky Jasper and dished it to Silvia Veloso on a fast break to start a 14-2 run over the final two and half minutes of the quarter as the Lady Saints took a 24-11 lead after the first.
The Lady Saints continued their hot shooting in the second quarter extending their lead to 20 with a Vilma Covane and-one. Vanessa Caro drilled a three from the right wing to get the Seward crowd on their feet as they could sense another win coming for Seward with the Lady Saints taking a 51-26 lead into halftime.
Mollie Mounsey moved into second place on the all-time scoring list in the first half of the game, passing Jamie Talbert. She finished the game with 13 points to put her at 1,280 career points.
The third quarter started rough for the Lady Saints, scoring just four points through the first four minutes of play. Brennyn Seagler got to the free throw line on back-to-back possessions, making all four, to get the Lady Saints back on track. Even with the slow start, Seward County was able to score 23 points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 31 points by the end of the third, by a score of 74-43.
Covane’s career-night continued in the fourth quarter as she scored the first six points for the Lady Saints. Chelsea Lazenby tied the points record with a mid-range jump shot before collecting a Kalen Green missed three-point shot and putting it in the basket to break the record. One more point by Lazenby finished the game for the Lady Saints as they won 103-64.
Seward shot 55.6 percent (40 of 72) from the floor for the game and 42.9 percent (12 of 28) from deep. As they’ve done all season, the Seward defense proved to be too much, forcing the Red Ravens into 25 turnovers, while holding them to 38.1 percent (24 of 63) from the floor and 31.3 percent (5 of 16) from behind the arc.
Along with Covane, Silvia Veloso (13 pts), Mollie Mounsey (13 pts), Brennyn Seagler (13 pts), and Valarie Caro (10 pts) all finished in double-figures. Veloso added five steals to tie Candi White for the 10th most steals in a single-season (104).
The Lady Saints will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Hartman Arena in Park City to face the winner of No. 5 seed Butler and No. 4 seed Cowley. The game can be watched on the KJCCC Network and can be heard on 107.5 KSCB with Brock Kappelmann (pxp) on the call.
