COLBY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team was toppled at Colby Community College, swept in a doubleheader, 9-7 and 11-2, on Friday.
The Lady Saints fell to 7-19 in the Jayhawk Conference and 15-27 overall. SCCC hosts Colby on Monday in games postponed earlier this season. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at French Family Field.
GAME ONE
Seward came up just short in a wild 9–7 loss Colby in the opener.
The Lady Saints came out swinging early with Anberlin Tatum lacing a two-run double in the top of the first inning and launching a two-run homer in the third to tie the game at 4-4. The Trojans scored four times in the first two innings to open a 4-2 margin.
Colby regained the lead at 6-4 with two runs in the third inning. Seward answered in the fifth with a three-run rally, highlighted by a defensive error, giving the Saints a 7–6 edge.
The lead did not last long as Colby came right back in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs to regain the advantage at 8-7 and added another run in the sixth for the final margin of 9-7.
Tatum finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored and Jahlisa Klear added two hits and scored twice for Seward.
GAME TWO
Seward struck first, but it was all Colby after that as the Lady Saints fell, 11-2, in a five-inning, run-rule loss in the nightcap.
Anberlin Tatum carried her hot-hitting from the first game with a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Lady Saints a brief 2-0 lead. The Trojans answered with four runs in the bottom of inning and never looked back.
Seward was still within striking distance until Colby iced the game with five runs in the fourth to open a 9-2 advantage. The Trojans ended the contest with a pair of runs in the fifth inning for an 11-2 run-rule victory.
Emily Lane went 2-for-2 and Jalisha Klear and Tatum accounted for the four Seward hits in the game.
