City to Begin Annual Street Maintenance

Chip sealing a city street. This image shows the entire chipseal process. The left side has already been reconditioned. On the right a black asphalt seal coat is being applied, behind small chipped rock is falling from an application machine. The rock will be pressed into the asphalt and excess swept up. Chipsealing is a less costly alternative to resurfacing an asphalt road.

The City of Liberal is scheduled to begin its annual street surface maintenance project on Monday, August 12. Chip seal will be applied to portions of Northeast Liberal, as well as Western Avenue from 15th Street to the railroad tracks. The overall project is expected to be completed in 7 to 10 days, weather permitting.

Residents in affected neighborhoods are reminded to keep vehicles off the streets and avoid sending excess water into the roadway until their street has been completed. Vehicles found in the project area will be towed at the owner’s expense in order to avoid delays to the chip seal process.

The chip seal to be completed on Western Avenue is expected to be completed within one day and take place during school hours to minimize impacts on school drop-off and pick-up traffic.

There will be no roadway closures and drivers are asked to give crews plenty of space to work safely. Once the chip seal has been properly worked into the roadway surface, pavement markings and school crosswalk zones will be reapplied to streets.
