The City of Liberal is seeking resident participation in a local mural project, funded in part by a grant from the Kansas Arts Commission. The project will be displayed on a background built at Light Park facing Kansas Avenue.

“We want this welcoming mural to be a reflection of Liberal’s values and community identity, so we are asking for residents to help us pick the themes we will use in our design,” Keeley Moree, Chief Communications Officer, said. “The mural will have the name ‘Liberal’ painted in bold letters with different scenes painted inside each letter.”

Residents of all ages are encouraged to help choose scene ideas by participating in an online survey available on the project website: www.cityofliberal.org/art. The survey is available in English and Spanish, with paper surveys and additional language assistance services are available at City Hall, 324 N. Kansas Ave.

Once the seven scene ideas are chosen, the selected mural artist, Karem Gallo, will design three concepts for the public to vote on. Gallo is a longtime resident of the area and was selected for this project due to her professional portfolio and extensive involvement in supporting public art projects.

“I’m thrilled to see this project taking place in Liberal and look forward to the opportunity to help bring the community’s ideas to life,” Gallo said. “I encourage everyone to support the project by taking the public survey to share their ideas.”

The mural scene survey will close on October 31st. For more information about this project, contact Keeley Moree at (620) 626-2257 or email [email protected]
