Busy Wrestling Weekend for LHS at Garden City and Larned
Brock Kappelmann - January 31, 2022 6:42 am
Liberal Redskin Varsity boys took 7 wrestlers to one of the states toughest and most prestigious tournaments, Rocky Welton at Garden City Friday and Saturday. The goal for some of the boys was to improve from the last time they were able to go, place, or just get experience with tough foes. All of that was accomplished in the two full days of wrestling. Out of the 7 wrestler 3 would place in a tournament that featured 32 teams from Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Nebraska. The three placers were Tommy McClure who placed 11th, Irving Mendez at 6th, and Trystian Juarez who would end up 3rd. All three boys made it to the front side Quarters before falling on day one.
Tommy McClure Would go 3 and 3 in the tournament Irving Mendez would wind up on the tough side of the bracket on day one, but would wrestle tough on the consolations side to come home medaling at 6th to continue his impressive senior season. Trystian Juarez would go on to avenge his only loss of the tournament when he would battle the backside and face Frankie Trivino from Scotts Bluff, whom he he had lost to in Quarter finals 5 to 3. This time Juarez would not let Trivino get the best as he would stick Trivino Early in the second period.
The other wrestlers who went were Aldo Hernandez, Amadeous Holler, Hudson Rice and Javon Allen. All would lose there first two matches on day one to be eliminated except for Allen who suffered an injury in his first match and was not able to continue.
Coaches Comments:
I was very proud of the character and sportsmanship that our wrestlers demonstrated at the Rocky Welton wrestling tournament. Through big wins and hard losses, our young men represented Liberal High school on a very high level. It was a great day to be part of an up and coming Angry Red wrestling team. The Angry Red Mens and Womens teams have some extremely tough competition coming up with WAC duals the next two weeks. Then both teams will be competing in the states toughest regionals, and then it’s on to the state tournaments. We have a home girls dual with Dodge City on the 7th, and a home dual, which is senior recognition night, for the boys on the 10th vs Dodge City. Please come out to the Big House to support our young men and womens’ wrestling teams.-Coach Fowler
