Bottom Falls Out for Redskin Track

Seven years after the LHS boys and girls won state, the Liberal boys and girls both finished last in the WAC track and field meet Thursday in Dodge City. The Liberal girls actually performed well considering they just have 12 athletes. The girls scored 46 which trailed WAC champ Dodge City (104), Great Bend (96), Garden City (75), and Hays (52). Mackensie Wright won the high jump at 4’10". She was also fifth in the long jump and triple jump. Caitlin Bauer took second in the shot (36’3") and the discus (118′). Destyni Lucero PR’d and placed second in the mile (5:40) and the two mile (12:23). Kim Francis was third in the 400 (1:03.98). Bethany Thompson was third in the shot put at 36’3". Mercy Perez placed fourth in the two mile. The 4×800 relay team of Kim Francis, Holly Hinkle, Mercy Perez, and Katie Moree took fourth.

The LHS boys were a long shot to beat Hays, but they had defeated Great Bend, Garden City, and Dodge City in every other meet. Thursday wasn’t their day. Hays won WAC with 145.75 followed byGreat Bend (76), Dodge City (56.75), Garden City (53), and Liberal (43.5). Trenton Hammond won the 300 hurdles at 40.69. Slader McVey won the javelin at 176’10". Trenton Hammond was third in the 110 hurdles followed by Adebayou Braimah at fourth and Ayodole Braimah for fifth. Kenlee West was third in the high jump and Trent Wilson was fourth. The 4×800 relay of Fidel Munoz, Alejandro Avila, Eric Minjarez, and Alan Grajeda took third. Justin McPhail was fifth in the discus and Nolan Larkin was fifth in the javelin. Liberal goes to the regional meet next Friday in Wichita.
