BLACK HILLS ENERGY-KANSAS GAS TO AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS TO GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

KSCB News - February 13, 2012 10:20 am

Black Hills Energy-Kansas Gas will award a $1,000 college scholarship to each of 15 students graduating from Kansas high schools who have a parent or guardian served by Black Hills Energy-Kansas Gas.

The application is available at blackhillsenergy.com/scholarships and must be returned to the address on the form by Friday, March 16. Due to the volume of applications, Black Hills Energy can only consider applications that are complete and on time. Scholarship recipients will be announced in May.

“ Contributing to higher education is an investment in the future of the communities we serve and an example of how we accomplish our mission, improving life with energy,” said Larissa Long, Black Hills Energy’s senior manager for external affairs in Kansas. “We contribute knowledge, experience and resources to partnerships we develop with community leaders, civic groups and businesses to support causes and guide economic development programs. Success depends upon the quality of our leaders, and education is key.”

Again, the application must be completed in full and returned to the address on the form by Friday, March 16 . Students may apply for a scholarship if they meet the eligibility requirements:

  • A parent or guardian must be a current Black Hills Energy-Kansas Gas customer

  • The student must rank in the top 25 percent of the graduating class or score 21 or higher on the ACT or 980 or higher on the SAT.

  • The student must plan to work toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university.

  • The student must not be a relative of a current or retired employee of Black Hills Corp. or its business units, including Black Hills Energy-Kansas Gas. “Relative” is defined here as a child, grandchild, brother, sister, stepchild, foster child, spouse or in-law.

“ Black Hills Energy employees live and work in the communities we serve,” Long said. “We also support our communities through system investments and the personal property, sales and other taxes we contribute. Our company has a 125-year-old legacy of service. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our customers in Kansas and look forward to carrying on that tradition of partnership.”
