The Liberal Bee Jays are surging now. Liberal has won five straight Jayhawk League games and seven of their last eight to sit in first place in the league after an 8-1 win over the Derby Twins Sunday night at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. UTA’s Zach Thompson pitched six shutout innings for the win. Tennessee Martin’s Trevor Lundgrin and Grayson’s Ray Ashford worked scoreless innings in relief before Coffeyville’s John Branum allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Liberal scored two in the third, four in the fifth, and two in the seventh. The BJ’s scored two in the third when Wichita State’s Dayne Parker singled home and run and OCU’s Johnathan Sigado hit a sacrifice fly. Liberal scored four in the fifth thanks in part to a pair of Derby errors. Seward’s Sam Pack drove home two with a single and UTA’s Travis Sibley drove home a run. The BJ’s added two more in the seventh when Parker doubled home two.

Parker was 2-5 with three RBI’s. Pack went 2-3 with two RBI’s.

Liberal is playing well defensively as well right now with just two errors in the series as the Twins (4-10, 4-8) committed eight errors in the series.

Liberal has won five straight and seven of the last eight. They are 10-3 overall and 8-3 in the Jayhawk. The Bee Jays host the Colorado Bombers for a non league game Monday night at 7 p.m. Yancey Insurance is the buyout sponsor.

Elsewhere in the Jayhawk Sunday night, El Dorado won at Dodge City 11-9 and Haysville defeated Hays 5-3.
