The Liberal Bee Jays settle for a split in their two game series in Gering against the Western Nebraska Pioneers. The Pios downed the Jays 7-2 Wednesday night at Oregon Trail Park Stadium.
After back to back walks to begin the game, the Pioneers scored two in the first. The B.J’s didn’t score in the first despite a lead off double by Ben Merriman or in the second despite a one out double by Matt Cormier. Ryota Kusumota laced a solo home run to left center in the third to make it 2-1. In the 4th, Kai Smith reached on an error and Matt Cormier ripped a double to right center. Bobby Orr singled to left to tie the game. Western Nebraska scored two in the fifth to lead 4-2 and added three in the eighth on three BJ walks and two errors.
Matt Cormier was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 2-3 with two doubles. Fidel Hatch started going four innings allowing two runs with four strikeouts and three walks. Brooks Kappelmann pitched 3 and 2/3 allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts and four walks.
Western Nebraska is 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the Rocky Mountain. Liberal is 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Rocky Mountain. Liberal plays at Fort Collins Thursday night at 7:05 central time with Dugout Show at 6:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
