The Liberal Bee Jays blew it open Monday night at Brent Gould Field. With wind gusts to almost 50 miles per hour blowing out to left, the Bee Jays hit three home runs while the Western Nebraska defense cratered in a 19-5 run rule game. The Pioneers committed six errors in the loss.
Liberal scored four in the first. Ryota Kusumoto singled and Joel Roberts singled him home. The Pioneers dropped a ball in left field to allow three runs to score. Liberal scored three in the second on three errors. The B.J.’s scored five in the third. Tommy Molina and Ryota Kusumoto singled in the inning and Elijah Batista lined a home run to left. The B.J.’s scored three in the fourth. Matt Cormier led off the inning with a double. James Nolan singled home a run. Brooks Kappelmann hit a line drive off the pitcher’s glove to score a run. Miller Durham slapped a single to left to score two as the B.J. lead ballooned to 15-0. The Pioneers scored five in the sixth. Liberal poured on four more in the sixth. Ryota Kusumoto led off the inning with a home run to left center. Brooks Kappelmann lined a double down the left field line. Miller Durham singled. Julius Ramirez lofted a three run home run to left.
Liberal had 19 runs on 13 hits while the Pioneers had five runs on six hits. Ryota Kusumoto was 3-5 with a home run. Joel Roberts, Elijah Batista, and Tommy Molina added two hits a piece. Hunter Phillips pitched five shutout innings and Trevor Steele worked a scoreless seventh.
Western Nebraska is 9-7 overall and 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain. Liberal is 8-2 and 7-2 in the RMBL. Liberal’s games with the Colorado Springs Collegiates were canceled because the Collegiates claim they don’t have enough players. The Bee Jays will have a night with the Liberal Rattlers 18u team Wednesday at 7pm at Brent Gould Field. The game will air on 1270 and 92.3. Sharp-McQueen PA is the buyout sponsor.
Seward County Community College will hold a benefit cookout for Jacob Still’s family on Wednesday, June 19 at Brent Gould Field when the Liberal Bee Jays host the Liberal Rattlers.
Seward County Community College will be cooking and serving hamburgers and hotdogs before the game, beginning at 6 p.m. Fans can contribute through a free-will donation. There will also be a raffle for a meat bundle. All proceeds will go to Still’s family.
Still, a Seward County Community College employee, passed away after suffering injuries in an accident on Wednesday, May 28.
