The Liberal Bee Jays and Great Bend Bat Cats split a double header Wednesday night at Brent Gould Field. The Bat Cats won game one 5-3 and Liberal took game two 5-2.
Liberal struggled to throw strikes in game one. The B.J.’s walked four batters in the third leading to a five run Bat Cat inning. Liberal’s Justin Hudson launched a three run home run in the sixth to bring Liberal closer. Despite GB pitching walking six and hitting two, the Bee Jays couldn’t muster enough offense with just two hits. The B.J.’s receive strong outing from their bullpen. Adrian Najar went 2 and 2/3 scoreless and Ryder Slatten went two scoreless frames.
Great Bend scored first in game two with a two run third. The Bee Jays countered with a two run third to tie it. Luke Rhee was hit by a pitch. Mateo Garcia singled. River Jackson slapped a single to right to drive home a run. Walker Polk grounded out to score a run. Liberal scored three in the fourth. Derek Lukes reached on an error. Jackson Schofield was hit by a pitch. Jett Brown singled home two runs. Luke Rhee singled. Mateo Garcia ripped an RBI double down the right field line. Hunter Phillips gave the B.J’s a solid start going five innings with four strikeouts. Davin Ronquist worked two scoreless innings. Mateo Garcia was 2-4. Great Bend out-hit Liberal 6-5 but committed an error and Liberal did not have an error.
Great Bend is 17-4 and Liberal is 13-4. Liberal hosts the Liberal Rattlers Saturday night at 7pm on 1270 and 92.3.
