Barton Sweeps Seward

The Barton Cougars, picked to win the Jayhawk West, swept the Seward County Saints Sunday at Brent Gould Field.  The Cougars won 6-2 and 17-4 in eight innings on a sunny day with light winds and temperatures in the sixties.  The weather was tranquil, but the Saints play on the diamond was not.

After scoring three runs and one run in the two games Thursday in Great Bend, the Saints offense stayed stagnant on Sunday.  Barton scored one in the  first and four in the third for a 5-0 lead.  Hayden Rammage hit a sac fly to score Jacob Urias in the fourth.  Barton with a run on no hits in the fifth.  Grant Cox doubled to lead in the fifth and Ruben Ayala double him home with a drive down the left field line.  That made the score 6-2.  The hits were even at 8-8.  SCCC committed the game’s only error.  Seward pitching walked six and hit one.  Barton walked four.  Grant Cox was 2-3.  Braden Whipple was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 4 and 1/3 innings allowing one run and one hit.

Barton jumped on Seward in game two for one in the first and two in the second.  Seward scored three in the second to tie the game at 3-3.  After a hit batter and two walks, Jackson Phillips blooped a single to center to score a run.  Ruben Ayala rolled a two RBI single through the right side to tie the game at 3-3.  Barton reclaimed the lead with a run in the fourth.  The Cougars scored in all but one inning with one in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and nine in the eighth.  Barton out-hit the Saints 12-3.  Barton committed three errors and Seward had two.  Seward walked 10 and hit five batters.  Barton walked five and hit one.

It’s Barton’s first four game sweep over Seward since 2017 at Great Bend.  Barton has won seven straight at Brent Gould Field.  Barton is 9-3 and 4-0 in the Jayhawk West.  Seward is 9-13 overall and 0-4 in the KJCCC West.  Seward plays at Lamar on Tuesday.
