The Liberal Redskins played their final game of the season Thursday night in the Big House. And they knew that going in. They failed to make the 6A sub state. But that didn’t stop the Skins from playing arguably their best game of the season in a wild 85-81 loss to Dodge City.
The Red Demons jumped out to a lead of 10-4 and led 16-12 after one quarter. The Demons looked poised to run away with the game leading 38-23, but the Angry Red finished the half on an 11-3 run to make it 41-34 DCHS at halftime. Liberal out scored Dodge City 26-19 in the third quarter. LHS led 53-52, 58-54, and 60-56. The game was tied 60-60 after three quarters. Dodge City’s parade to the foul line helped them prevail in the fourth quarter.
Liberal had a great shooting game for a team which has shot about 35 percent this season. The Redskins shot 48 percent from the field. They made 7-20 from three point range and 18-20 from the free throw line. However, LHS committed 25 turnovers. Liberal out rebounded Dodge City 41-32. Dodge City shot 44 percent and 5-15 from three. They went 30-48 from the foul line.
Carson Chamberlain broke through with 25 points and 4-7 shooting from three point range. Brooks Kappelmann scored a career high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Zayden Martinez registered another double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. James Fieser dropped in 13.
Liberal finishes 2-18 and 0-8 in the WAC. It’s their worst season since 2002 when they went 2-19. Dodge City is 6-14 overall and 2-6 in the WAC.
