LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team lost a doubleheader to Hutchinson Community, 8-4 and 8-5, at French Family Field on Sunday.
Seward fell to 7-17 in the Jayhawk Conference and 13-25 overall. The Lady Saints host Lamar for a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday. Game times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
GAME ONE
Seward gave up a big inning early and clawed back, but came up short in an 8-4 loss to Hutchinson in the opener.
The Lady Saints were tagged for five runs by the Blue Dragons in the first inning and that would prove to be the difference. Seward battled back for three runs in the second highlighted by Kynleigh Kirby‘s two-run home run. The other run scored on a Hutchinson error and the lead was cut to 5-3.
The Blue Dragons added two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth while the Lady Saints could only scratch out its final run in the fifth.
GAME TWO
The Lady Saints blew an early lead and failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities in an 8-5 defeat to Hutchinson in the nightcap.
Hutchinson opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Seward came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 3-1 advantage. The Blue Dragons tied it with two runs in the third inning, but again the Lady Saints answered with a run in the bottom to grab a 4-3 lead. Seward had a golden opportunity to add more runs in the inning with bases loaded and one out, but could not come through with a big hit.
The Blue Dragons took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth for an 8-4 lead. The Lady Saints added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning leading off with a pair of doubles, but could not pull off the rally.
