Shirley Jane Mitchell

Shirley Jane Mitchell, age 88, died Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community Memory Care Unit in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born November 2, 1936, at home in Hugoton, Kansas. Twenty minutes later twin, Sheila Jeane, came along. Was this a joy or a curse to parents, Melvin and Pauline (Ives) Creamer. 

Shirley grew up in Hugoton and graduated from Hugoton High School with the class of 1954. She was a homemaker and a paraprofessional for 10 years at the Garden City Schools. She was active in the community and volunteered at the St. Catherine Hospital Gift Shop and the Senior Citizens Center. Shirley enjoyed sewing, knitting, needle point, quilting and restoring antiques.

Shirley is survived by her son, Burt Mitchell and wife, Julie, of Kansas; sisters, Sharon Butler and Robin Hawkins; brothers, Larry Creamer and Roy Creamer; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Mel and Polly Creamer; son, Steven Mitchell; daughter, Jane Mitchell; sisters, Rose Ann Lof, Charlene Pennington, Sheila Kneller, Janice Dyke, and Jo Wise; and brother, Charles “Butch” Creamer.

Graveside service will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton with Reverend Wes Young officiating. Memorials may be given to Garden City Community College Endowment Scholarship in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 920 E. 11th St., Hugoton, KS 67951.
