COLBY, Kan. – A 14-strikeout, seven-inning no-hitter thrown by Seward County freshman Brooks Kappelmann, along with a 17-hit week for Hutchinson Community College catcher Anthony Mazza have led to Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West Division Baseball Player of the Week honors for the diamond duo.
Anthony Mazza – Hutchinson (KJCCC Baseball West Division Player of the Week)
Blue Dragon freshman catcher/designated hitter Anthony Mazza continued his torrid start to the season, recording hits in all eight games Hutchinson played last week in going 6-2. For the week, Mazza hit .567 (17 for 30) with five doubles, a home run, seven RBIs, and 13 runs scored. He now has a 13-game hitting streak to start the season. Mazza had six multi-hit games, including a trio of three-hit games against Highland and Coffeyville (twice). Mazza hit a walk-off extra-inning home run in the Blue Dragons’ 4-3 win over Des Moines Area on Monday and was three-for-three with four RBIs in a 15-5 win over Coffeyville. Mazza is third in the nation in hitting with a .609 batting average.
Brooks Kappelmann – Seward County (KJCCC Baseball West Division Pitcher of the Week)
Kappelmann was electric on the mound in his only start of the week, tossing a seven-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts. In five appearances this season, Kappelmann is 2-0 with 37 strikeouts in 26.0 innings pitched, with his total strikeouts leading the KJCCC and ranking 12th nationally.
