The Seward baseball team split a pair in Vernon, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Saints took game one 9-4 but lost game two 15-5.
Game one was a low scoring affair early. The Chaps scored in the third. Seward countered with three in the fourth, one in the fifth and sixth, before breaking it open with four in the seventh. The Saints out-hit the Chaps 11-8. Seward had the game’s only error. Brooks Kappelmann went five strong innings for the win with four strikeouts, two walks, five hits, and one run. Nathan Hopkins was 3-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs, and two RBI’s. Brooks Barber, Kotaro Wakui, and Jaconb Urias had two hits a piece. Grant Cox hit a home run, drove home two, and scored two. Kaden Juarez was 1-1 with two RBI’s.
Game two went seven innings due to run rule. The Saints scored two in the first but the Chaps plated five first inning runs. Vernon added one in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth to lead 9-2. Seward did score one in the fifth and two in the seventh but the Chaps scored two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Vernon out-hit Seward 14-11. Seward committed four errors. Blaine Clancy was 3-3 with a home run, a double, and three RBI’s. John Langehennig and Brooks Barber had two hits a piece. The Saints walked eight batters and struck out four.
Vernon is 8-6 and Seward is 6-6. The same two teams play two Sunday at noon in Vernon.
