A win of the gritty variety for the Liberal Lady Redskins at The Garden in Garden City Tuesday night. Liberal held on for a 44-41 win over the Garden City Lady Buffaloes. Liberal’s defense harassed the Lady Buffs into 19 turnovers.
This was a game played with great effort and a great number of miscues by both offensive teams. GCHS led 8-6 after one quarter and 17-11 at halftime. LHS won the third quarter and trailed 29-27 after three. The Lady Redskins finally took the lead at 33-32 with 5:21 to play for the first time since leading 4-3 early on. Liberal led 42-41 with 2:08 to play and despite missing multiple shots and free throws down the stretch, Zoe Torres calmed the waters sinking two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining.
LHS won despite an off shooting night going 1-11 from three and 13-22 at the foul line. Garden City was 6-21 from 3 and 5-8 at the foul line.
Kylie Rhine was Epic Touch Player of the Game scoring 17 and giving a great defensive effort against GCHS guard Mia Hannagan. Hannagan scored 27 against Great Bend Friday but tallied six against LHS. Shamari Lewis added 10 points. Zoey Torres added nine.
Garden City is 6-3 and 1-1 in the WAC. Liberal wins their fourth straight at Garden City and improves to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the WAC. Liberal plays at Dodge City Friday at 6pm with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
