Day two of the preliminary hearings for Tad Cullum and Cole Twombly, both charged with murder and kidnapping in the deaths of Veronica Butler and Jillian Kelley, saw significant developments.
Before testimony began, Cole Twombly waived his right to a preliminary hearing and a speedy trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 7.
Paul Grice, another defendant in the case, continued his testimony, claiming he was brainwashed by Tiffany Adams, the paternal grandmother of Butler’s children. Adams was reportedly in a custody battle with Butler. Grice testified that Adams referred to Kelley as a “nobody” and said she had to be killed as “collateral.”
Grice recounted the murder of Butler and described seeing Tad Cullum strangling Kelley. He admitted to stabbing Kelley on the way to the burial site, unsure if she was still alive. Grice said he was uncertain whether he or Cullum killed Kelley.
Jamie Beasley, who owns the property where the victims’ bodies were found, testified that Cullum inquired about cameras overlooking the highway a week before the murders.
Beasley also mentioned that Cullum offered to clean up trees and bury leftover concrete on his property the day before the murders.
Concrete was later discovered on top of the freezer containing the victims’ remains.
The judge ordered Cullum to stand trial on charges including two counts of first-degree murder.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty. Paul Grice, Tiffany Adams, Cole Twombly, and Cora Twombly are expected to return to court throughout the next year.
