SCCC Chapter of PTK Inducts 79 New Members

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa held its induction ceremony for the fall on Tuesday.

Seventy-nine SCCC students were inducted into the honor society for community colleges. To be eligible, students must have completed at least 12 hours of college-level courses or six hours towards a certification and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher after their first semester. Students include dual credit high school seniors and up.

First-time PTK advisors Norma Jean Dodge, director of Business & Industry, and communications instructor Amy Thompson, were excited for the students and the opportunities that joining the group will have for them.

“… Phi Theta Kappa offers students an opportunity to building meaningful connections through conferences, online trainings, and scholarship programs,” Dodge said.

Thompson added, “The internships and leadership trainings offered through PTK International are significant and not things that we can offer on our own. I don’t think anyone is going to be convinced by hearing they can learn Robert’s Rules of Order, but that is a byproduct of building professional leadership skills. Leadership isn’t always easy.”

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.
